Legacy of Legends 3

Chapter 24

Uncertain

The next day, things didn’t look any better. Zaze woke up to some bad news.

“We still haven’t found him.”
“What?” Zaze blurted out.
Spyro nodded. “Maybe he did run out of the Temple. We’re not sure, Zaze. Volteer and I personally made rounds at the city. We couldn’t find him.”
“We even asked the moles,” Cynder added. The dragoness had decided to join the search effort. But it didn’t change much. “They didn’t see him in the city either. He must be out there.”
Zaze shook his head. “This is my fault. I should have been more aware of the situation.”
“Don’t blame yourself, Zaze. It’s bad enough that Volteer is doing it too,” Sparx said.
The dragon just sighed and scratched his head. This was spiraling out of control. The worst thing that could happen now was that Trax ended up dead. And another dead dragon wasn’t something Zaze wanted on his conscience. One was bad enough as it is.
“If it makes you feel better, we’re going to look for him later,” Spyro said, seeing Zaze look so distraught. “We’re all trying, Zaze. Try not to be so down. It’s not like anything bad is going to happen.”
Zaze glanced at Spyro, a bit surprised at the dragon’s enthusiasm. He let out a sigh as he began to think rationally. Spyro had a good point. It wasn’t like something bad was going to happen. Sure, Trax missing was a big issue, but it’s not as big as the time they had to deal with someone like Phase. The world wasn’t going to end just because one dragon was missing. That was just too farfetched. “You’re right.”
Spyro smiled and nodded to him.
“Still, I’m coming with you guys to look for him.”
“Isn’t this great?” Sparx said, looking at the three dragons. “We get to hang out again, doing something together for a change.”
“Don’t we do that all the time?” Cynder asked.
“Well, yeah, but not like this. This isn’t school related.”
Spyro nodded. “He has a point.”
“Speaking of school, we’ll talk later, Sparx. We have a class.”
The dragonfly nodded and hovered in place as he waved goodbye at the dragons. “Catch you later! You know where to find me!”

“On three; one.”

He breathed hard. This was it.

“Two.”

He glanced at the dragon at the side that stood next to his other classmates. He nodded back in encouragement. He focused. He was going to make him proud.
“Three.”

He opened his maw and launched his attack. A large boulder launched itself into the air and collided with one of the many dummies that magically spawned in front of him. It was smashed into smithereens, leaving nothing in its place. The dragon didn’t stop, as he went into the offensive, attacking the other defenseless dummies. The rest of the students watched in awe at how well the dragon had seemingly gotten in over the span of a few days.
“Is this your handiwork?”
Crombe turned his head to see Flame smiling at him. “It is.” He turned back to see his apprentice show off the skills they’ve been working on. “It’s was tough, but Steppe’s a lot better now than he was before.”
Flame nodded, watching at how fluid the dragon moved. It wasn’t on par with the skill level of someone like Zaze, Spyro or Cynder, but the skill was getting there. Flame followed Steppe’s movement with his eyes. The dragon moved with intent, working as efficiently as possible in an effort to take down all the dummies. “I’m proud of you.”
“Huh?” Crombe’s brow rose. “Did you say something?”
“I said I’m proud of you.”
The dragon cocked his head to the side, looking at the fire dragon curiously. “For what?”
“For doing this.” Flame smiled at him, gesturing to the spectacle in front of them. “I remember you vividly saying you didn’t like it at all. Yet it seems you’re the one who’s the most invested in all of it.”
Crombe blinked. He then shrugged. “I guess I did say that. There’s no need to rub it in my face.”
“I’m not rubbing it in your face,” Flame replied. “I’m happy that you’re actually nicer than you seem.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Crombe!”

Their conversation was cut off as Steppe ran up to him, practically bouncing along the way with excitement.

“Did you see what I did!?” he asked, brimming with happiness.
“I did,” Crombe replied. “I told you that you could do it.”
“Well you did, but you helped me! Thanks so much!” Steppe replied. “Terrador said he had never seen someone improve so much!”
“He did?” Crombe turned his head to face Terrador. As if on cue, the Guardian looked up and their eyes met. Terrador nodded to him, as if to acknowledge his hard work. Crombe smiled back.
“He did! He says he wants to talk to you later.”
Crombe nodded making a mental note of it. He then turned his attention back and saw Flame smiling at him.
“What?” he asked, a bit unnerved at how he smiled.
“Nothing; it just feels like I don’t know you anymore,” Flame replied.
Crombe was about to say something when Steppe’s group friends appeared. Wanting to give them space, he discreetly excused himself and walked up Flame. “You were saying?”
“You’re just so different now.”
“Different how?”
“You’re nicer, that’s one thing. You’re talking to me, something you didn’t do as much before. Do you want me to keep going?”
Crombe just gave him a flat stare. “I was being serious.”
“I AM serious!” Flame replied, surprised the dragon didn’t believe him. Conveniently enough, Ember passed by. Maybe another dragon’s opinion could help.
“Crombe!” she said, smiling at the dragon. “You were the one that was tutoring Steppe, right?”
“I am,” he answered.
“You did a great job!”
“Thank you.”
“See!” Flame added, making Ember look at him. “Crombe doesn’t believe me when I say he’s changed and he’s nicer now.”
“But you are, Crombe,” Ember said, facing the dragon. “I like you more this way.”
“Thank you?” Crombe wasn’t sure how to respond. This was probably the first time someone had complimented him on something that wasn’t his fighting skill.
Ember then walked off, heading over to Cynder to talk about something. Flame smirked at the earth dragon. “Look at you, getting compliments. The next thing we know, dragons are lining up to get tutored by you.”
Crombe shook his head frantically. “Please no. I don’t think I can handle it.”
Flame then dared to ask. “What if they’re dragonesses?”
“What?” Crombe looked confused. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“What if they’re BEAUTIFUL dragonesses?”
“What are you saying?”
Flame’s point however seemed to just fly over the earth dragon. He was beginning to think that he must be as equally dense as Zaze in things like this. Then a thought crossed his head; a very dangerous thought. “Crombe?”
“Yeah…?” He didn’t like the tone Flame was speaking now.
“Do you…not like dragonesses?”
Crombe’s eyes narrowed. “And by that you mean?”
Flame decided to be blunt. “Crombe, are you gay?”

The dragon couldn’t believe what he was hearing. To say he was shock was an understatement. “NO!” he shouted, a little too loud than normal. It attracted everyone’s attention, making them all turn to face them. “I mean…” he said, regaining his composure. “No, I am not, Flame. I am insulted that you even suggest that.”
Flame raised his paws in defense. “I’m sorry. I just needed to make sure. I wasn’t judging either way.”
Crombe just shook his head, rubbing his face with his paw. “I cannot believe you would even think that.”
“I don’t know, Crombe. Dragons can be…surprisingly deceptive. I’m still not sure about you…”
The dragon just rolled his eyes and decided to change the subject. “You mean you know someone who is, then?”
“I remember there being a time when we all thought that Zaze was like that.”
Crombe couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “What? Why? He doesn’t act like that.”
“You weren’t there yet at the time,” Flame replied.
“So? Is he then?” Was the dragon that her cousin had fallen for wasn’t even looking for someone like her?
“I…” Flame racked his head for the answer. “You know…we never found out.”

Crombe’s eyes went wide. This was too much information for one day for him. It was just too much.

“Crombe?”
The dragon turned around to find out who was looking for him. “Yes?”
“Hey, Terrador!” Flame called out, looking up at the earth guardian.
“Hello, Flame, can I talk with Crombe privately? Class ended a few minutes ago so you’re free to go now,” Terrador said, smiling down at both of them.
“Alright; catch you later, Flame!” The fire dragon then started walking off.
“And Flame?” Terrador called out to him.
“Yeah?”
“Take Steppe with you.”
Flame turned his head to look at the door to see the earth dragon patiently waiting. He was obviously waiting for Crombe, his master. He walked up to the dragon who entertained himself by idly rocking back and forth.
“Hey Flame,” Steppe replied.
“Hello Steppe,” he greeted back. “Listen, Terrador needs to talk to Crombe,” he gestured behind him. “Why don’t you hang out with me for a while?”
The dragon visibly looked saddened. “Oh, really?” His shoulders drooped and his tail stopped wagging. “I guess that’s fine too.”
Flame’s brow rose and noted this change in behavior. “Come on, I can be cool as Crombe too you know.”
“Really?” The dragon asked, looking at him curiously.
“Really.” Flame then started walking out of the room, motioning for him to walk with him. The dragon followed, keeping pace with the fire dragon. “For the record, I beat Zaze in a fight before.”
“You did!?” The dragon looked mind blown. “How!?”
Flame was a bit surprise at the sudden response. But he regained his composure. “Yeah, I did. You can ask him yourself that.”
“I can’t believe you beat a purple dragon in a fight.”
Flame smiled sheepishly. “Well…he wasn’t purple yet back then…”
“What?”
The dragon waved a paw at him. “Details, details…”
“What do you mean he wasn’t purple yet? What are you talking about?” Steppe asked, completely puzzled.
“I think this story is best told with Zaze. We should go find him,” Flame replied. He needed the help of the purple dragon to set things straight. Admittedly, he mentioned the story to at least look cool in front of the dragon. But truth wasn’t as interesting as the imagination. Maybe he could convince Zaze that they had a cool fight. And that it didn’t exactly end with him winning because Zaze gave up.

That would just be boring.

The two earth dragons stood out at the balcony, overlooking the city that is Warfang. Terrador stood beside Crombe, who was wondering what he was doing there.
“You wanted to talk to me?”
“I did. I’ll get to the point.” The Earth Guardian turned to face him, a serious look on his face. “I’ve noticed your efforts in helping Steppe get better. And I commend you for that.”
“Uh…thank you?” Crombe was not used to being complimented.
“That’s not the only thing I noticed,” Terrador replied.
“What do you mean?”
“Crombe, there comes a time when a Guardian has to choose who is to succeed him. I’m sure you’re aware of this?”
He nodded. “You mean an apprentice.”
“Yes.”

Terrador looked at him seriously.

“I want to have you as my apprentice, Crombe.”

“What?”
Terrador smiled, and looked at the earth dragon seriously. “I want to take you as my apprentice, Crombe. I want you to be the next Earth Guardian.”
Crombe was still trying to process the information that was being fed to him. He was still recovering from the overall shock. “Me?” he pointed to himself. “But…why?”
The larger dragon’s brow furrowed. “Honestly Crombe, isn’t it obvious? You’re the best candidate I could ever choose. You’re strong willed, honest, skilled and knows the difference between right and wrong; qualities that will make you a fine Guardian; qualities that I like, which is why

Chapter 23
Change of Heart
“I’m sorry to hear about your cousin.”
Steppe said, after Crombe finished relaying his story. The two dragons sat next to each other, lounging around the Training Dojo. Crombe expected his story to last for only a short minute or so, expecting himself to just summarize everything, seeing as the young dragon didn’t need a full on backstory about him. But, for some apparent reason, he found himself confiding in the young dragon. He found himself talking about himself, a subject he hated. He even divulged information he didn’t share with anyone; the fact that he was related to the ice dragoness, Latis. A revelation he came upon, sadly too late.
